  1. 1855 - 1909
    The rule of Sheikh Zayed the First in Abu Dhabi, and the consolidation of his authority in Al Ain.
  2. 1897
    Earliest evidence for the date of Qasr Al Muwaiji’s construction, from a coin excavated on the site.
  3. 1928
    Qasr al Muwaiji used to distribute aid under Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Khalifa during the economic depression.
  4. 1946
    Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan appointed as Ruler’s Representative in Al Ain. He establishes his family home and official diwan at Qasr al Muwaiji.
  5. 1948
    HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan born at Qasr Al Muwaiji, the eldest son of Sheikh Zayed and Sheikha Hassa.
  6. 1950s
    Sheikh Zayed oversees improvements to water access, education and infrastructure in Al Ain. At the same time, he orders the expansion of Qasr al Muwaiji.
  7. 1966
    Sheikh Zayed becomes Ruler of Abu Dhabi and appoints his son, HH Sheikh Khalifa as Ruler’s Representative in Al Ain. They both move to Abu Dhabi.
  8. 1969
    HH Sheikh Khalifa appointed Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.
  9. 1971
    The Union of the Emirates: Sheikh Zayed elected as the first President of the UAE. HH Sheikh Khalifa appointed Minister for Defence and Finance, and later as Deputy Prime Minister.
  10. 1974
    HH Sheikh Khalifa becomes Chairman of the Executive Council of Abu Dhabi, leading all development projects in the Emirate.
  11. Late 1970s
    First phase of restoration work at Qasr al Muwaiji.
  12. 1988
    Sheikh Zayed bestows increasing responsibility on HH Sheikh Khalifa, appointing him President of the newly founded Supreme Petroleum Council, which directs Abu Dhabi’s oil policy.
  13. 1993
    HH Sheikh Khalifa establishes the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Foundation for welfare and humanitarian work.
  14. 2004/19
    Ramadan 1425
    The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan (May God Rest His Soul) passes away. His son, HH Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan becomes Ruler of Abu Dhabi and is elected unanimously as the new President of the United Arab Emirates.

    The beginning of extensive archaeological excavations and conservation work at Qasr al Muwaiji.
  16. 2011
    Al Ain’s cultural sites become the UAE’s first UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
  17. 2012
    HH Sheikh Khalifa is listed by Forbes as one of the 40 most powerful people in the world.

    Qasr al Muwaiji opens to the public, home to a landmark exhibition on the history of the fort and on the life and accomplishments of HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed.
